GHRC was honored to host a spring concert on Sunday, April 13, featuring singer-songwriters Gina Chavez and Elena Lacayo. Over 40 people attended the event, and just over $2,000 was raised to benefit both GHRC and Niña Arriba — a college fund founded by Gina Chavez and Jodi Granado.
Kicking off the event was Elena Lacayo and one other member of Elena & Los Fulanos, who played a short set of bilingual folk rock songs:
Following Elena, Gina Chavez — an Austin-based artist — played an hour-long set of songs that bridge Latin folk and American pop music. Gina’s music is inspired by her experiences as an ethnically mixed American woman, and has received substantial recent praise. She recently completed eight months of mission work in El Salvador and established Niña Arriba, a college scholarship fund for girls she lived with in a gang-dominated part of San Salvador.
GHRC would like to thank everyone who was a part of this event, and express our gratitude to community art space Casa Phoenix for hosting the concert. We can’t wait to connect at a later date!
